Caring for Your
Antiques (2 sessions)
What are the
best ways to look after your antiques and fine furniture? What should
you do if a piece is scratched, worn, or broken? We'll spend some time
looking at examples of period furniture in order to learn about how
they were built and finished. Then we'll discuss easy ways to protect
your furniture from damage, and routine care for antique and modern
finishes; we'll explore some safe techniques for doing minor touch-ups
and repairs yourself; and we'll learn when to get professional help.
Participants are encouraged to bring a piece (e.g. dining chair or small
table) to class - we'll allow for lots of question-and-answer time!

Understanding Antique Furniture
(lecture/demonstration, 3 hours)
Learn about what makes an
antique valuable, and how to recognize fakes. We'll look at
examples from different periods, with emphasis on structure and
construction methods, woods used, typical decoration such as carving and
inlays. We'll explore differences between hand and machine
construction techniques and relate these to the age and authenticity of
antique pieces. And we'll discuss the hype and the reality of
"original finish and condition" -- when does it really matter?
